The Mobile Cocktail Company raises money for Cancer Research

Banger Rally Challenge for Cancer Research
Dorset, April 2011: Based in Sherborne, Dorset The Mobile Cocktail Company has today asked local businesses and residents to help raise money for Cancer Research – as founder Nigel Parker, and close friend Rob Girling, prepare to take on the world famous Moancer Researchtoscape Rally to Bologna.
Open for sponsorship now, Nigel and Rob’s engine will start on 3rd September this year. The gruelling route will take them through five European countries in five days - finishing in Bologna, Italy - with stops at the Nurburgring, Germany and the Ferrari Museum, Italy.
The concept of the Motoscape Rally is to buy a car for £250 or less, turn it into a wacky, eye-catching masterpiece and drive it through some of the greatest roads in Europe – together with hundreds of other motorsport enthusiasts. Nigel and Rob’s plan is to have every person or company making a donation to sign, or add a sticker the car to create a unique vehicle which will really stand out from the crowds.
Commenting on the challenge, Nigel and Rob said: “We both have close friends affected by cancer; specifically liposarcoma cancer and cancer of the oesophagus. The donations that everybody makes will be aimed at these cancers.  Alarmingly, both these types of cancer are on the increase and funds are desperately required to undertake the necessary research to develop better surgical procedures, solutions and treatments.  Of course, all these types of developments also have the potential to benefit many other cancer conditions and non-cancer condition, so regardless of whether people are familiar with the conditions mentioned above, the contributions are important for all walks of life.  We both ask that everybody bears this fact in mind when contributing to this great cause.  The simple fact is, this could be you benefitting from these contributions one day”
The money raised by Nigel and Rob will be co-ordinated through Cancer Research - the world’s leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. Cancer Research has saved millions of lives with groundbreaking work into preventing, diagnosing and treating cancer. People’s chances of surviving cancer have doubled in the last 40 years, and the charity has been at the heart of that progress. But more than one in three people will still get cancer at some point in their lives. The charity’s vital work, funded entirely by the public, will help ensure that millions more people survive.
Please note, all costs associated with the rally are being paid by Nigel and Rob themselves.  All donations will go directly to Cancer Research….every single penny!

It’s the mint that makes the mojito

The only mobile cocktail bar to go the extra few thousand miles

Cuba’s famed mojito cocktail, once a daily tipple of Ernest Hemingway, and enjoyed by James Bond in the movie Die Another Day, is made with rum, sugar, lime juice and mint.  But not any old mint - legendary cocktail maestro Salvatore Calabrese insists it must be Cuba’s unique mojito mint.   And Nigel, having tasted the real thing, was not about to argue.

However, an F1 hybrid, Cuban mint cannot be grown successfully from seed, and no plants were available outside the island.   Was Nigel deterred?  “Yes, of course!” he replies.  “But not for long.  I realised there was only one thing for it – another working holiday in the bars of Havana and across the island’s many mint plantations.”

After extensive sampling the perfect plant was selected.  But how to get it home?  “I discovered,” continues Nigel, “that you can carry plants in your hand luggage…and I hatched a precision plan.  I lined up a few small containers in the departure lounge, popped in the plants, then squirted in some fizzy water (to make sure they had sufficient CO2 for the ride), before sealing them up with tape and carrying them on the plane.   Nobody batted an eyelid - imagine doing that in Heathrow!”

Our very own secret stash

These plants have now been propagated to fill a 60 foot polytunnel at a hidden location near the Mobile Cocktail Company HQ, providing enough fresh mint for all their portable bars.

“We’re thrilled to be the only cocktail bar hire company (and probably the only bar, bar none) in the UK which uses genuine fresh Cuban mojito mint - because it really makes all the difference.  It has a more delicate, floral scent and flavour, creating the perfect balance, ensuring we can deliver the true taste of a Cuban mojito at your event.”

Nigel has built his business with the same passion that took him to Cuba and the bars of Manhattan.  He instils it into all his staff, training them in-house to ensure every cocktail is created to the same high standard, with fast friendly service, no matter how big and busy the event.

“I love creating drinks which really hit the spot for people.  What started as a special treat for close friends has progressed to an impressive list of events that includes portable cocktail bars at Henley Royal Regatta and the Earl Pembroke’s wedding at Wilton House.”

Gin Garden

Gin has always been good friends with elderflower but it is less well known that it also gets on with cucumber, try a slice next time in your G & T. This recipe combines the two flavours with a refreshingly fruity and light creation.

  • 1/4 cucumber, peeled and chopped
  • 12.5 ml Elderflower cordial
  • 50 ml Gin
  • 25 ml quality apple juice

Muddle the chopped cucumber and elderflower cordial in a cocktail shaker to release all the cucumbers juices and flavours. Then add the gin, apple juice and some ice and shake vigorously to chill. Double strain into a chilled Martini glass. Can be decorated with cucumber slices on the rim.
